Dear Korea Part II

I have to say, I didn’t expect to be writing this so soon.  Unfortunately injuries are a part of the job description as a professional athlete.  And as the lone foreigner that sometimes means an unexpected and early trip home.

It’s hard to find the words in a situation like this.  Although I’ve been enjoying the Colorado sunshine, seasons changing and the familiarities of home, this all still feels very bittersweet.  I have debated for a couple weeks between writing and not writing, because I know that saying my early departure is a disappointment, is more than an understatement…for my team and company, the fans and myself.  For that, I am truly sorry.  Since I re-signed with Hi-Pass, I was looking forward to coming back to South Korea to compete in a second season, and had high expectations for Dorogongsa this year (and I still do!)  This was the last thing I expected to happen.

Sometimes your body has other plans, and mine was not cooperating with me and what the team was asking of me.  From the time of my injury in early September, the timeline of recovery was very up in the air, and I was not improving.  After four weeks of treatment and rehab and no real relief,  the team and I decided the best thing to do was for me to return to the States, and get better.

As athletes, we put our bodies on the line every day that we practice and compete.  But, the bottom line is that after our perspective careers, we still need our bodies for the rest of our lives, and that more than anything volleyball related, is what this decision came down to.  I have started physical therapy and with a lot of work and a little luck I hope to be back on the court in January.

I will always have fond memories of my time in Korea, and will be following along this year.  I wish the absolute best for all of the people I was able to meet and get to know along the way, and thank you to Korea Expressway for their endless support.  Until the next adventure…

Saranghaeyo to my team.  I’ll miss you beautiful girls, and you all have a place to stay with me here in Colorado if you ever decide to come to the USA.  XO.

Though I’m not a Dorogonsa fan (GS fighting!), I have wanted to see you in this season for your lovely smile. Hope you come back to the court as soon as possible.
